Beijing furniture enterprises face "life and death"

In the context of a group of furniture manufacturers that are causing environmental pollution to move out of Beijing and to Hebei, Beijing furniture manufacturers will face another "life and death robbery".

Furniture manufacturers are almost impossible to retreat

It is understood that Beijing is preparing a very strict emission standards for furniture manufacturers. Recently, the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau held a live meeting at the Qumei factory and announced the launch of the "100 Environmental Protection Technical Reform Projects". The core of this technological transformation project is the planned implementation of more than 100 environmental pollution prevention and technological transformation projects this year, which involves the technological transformation and treatment of multiple polluting elements such as volatile organic compounds, desulfurization, denitration, and dust removal.

Zheng Zaihong, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Pollution Prevention and Control Department, revealed that reducing pollutant emissions through technological innovation is an important task for Beijing. The standards for pollutant emission detailed in the industry will be introduced, and the pollutant emission standards for seven industries such as furniture manufacturing are also being revised, and will also be introduced at the end of this year. This means that the pollutant discharge standards for the furniture production industry are stricter. This standard will be a "tight spell" for furniture manufacturing enterprises, and furniture manufacturing enterprises have almost no retreat.

The industry believes that the coating industry, including furniture manufacturing, is an important "contribution" source of VOCs pollution. Tan Chunlei, secretary general of China Coatings Industry Association, said that the pollution caused by paint not only comes from the paint itself, but also from the solvents used in the paint. If VOCs are not properly treated, they will all evaporate into the atmosphere and cause pollution to the environment. VOCs will also be affected by environmental factors to produce chemical reactions that generate more toxic pollutants than the original, thereby forming secondary pollution.

Relocating factories in Hebei is also an expedient measure

In the face of this "hard move" by the environmental protection department, Zhu Changling, chairman of the China Furniture Association, has a very clear attitude: "After the standard is introduced, the enterprise must definitely make rectification according to the standard. If it does not meet the standard, it can only close the door and there is no escape route." Insiders analyzed In the future, the emission standards for pollutants in nine industries may be issued as national standards. At that time, Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Pearl River Delta regions will carry out environmental protection technological transformation. Therefore, Beijing furniture manufacturing enterprises may move the factory site to Hebei, or it may only be an expedient measure to solve the fundamental problems, or rely on thorough environmental protection technological transformation.

So, how can furniture production reduce VOCs emissions? "The core is to replace traditional paint with water-based paint." Yu Xiufen, vice chairman of Beijing Furniture Association, said. As early as 2012, Beijing Furniture Association began to focus on promoting water-based paint. At that time, the association selected 120 enterprises above designated size for investigation. According to sampling, only 8.3% used water-based paints. Although the proportion of water-based paints currently used has increased, it probably accounts for about 15%. However, Yu Xiufen believes that "most production enterprises still have insufficient knowledge of water-based paints, and believe that water-based paints do not meet the standards of color and hardness, and some enterprises are concerned about the cost of upgrading production lines."

In this regard, Yu Pengfei, director of the planning department of Beijing Tiantan Furniture Factory, which already has two water-based paint production lines, said that it will take some time for water-based paint products to be accepted by consumers. As for the cost, water-based paints do not have the problem of who is higher and lower than ordinary paints. Water-based paints can also be divided into multiple grades according to different products. Therefore, it is absolutely unscientific to say that water-based paint is more expensive than ordinary paint.
