After more than a year of research and development, Singapore researchers have developed a food waste recycling system that can turn food waste into organic fertilizers.
According to Singapore’s “Lianhe Zaobao†recently reported that Li Yuankun, a professor of microbiology at the National University of Singapore who is involved in research and development, said that human food is complex and diverse. No one “supermicrobe†can effectively decompose all types of food at the same time, so they find out that Thirteen kinds of “super strong microorganisms†can be decomposed for different components contained in foods.
The food waste recycling system that adds these 13 "super-microbes" "digests" food waste in only 5 to 8 hours.
Earlier this year, the researchers installed a food waste recycling system at a garbage collection station that can handle between 75 kg and 100 kg of food waste collected from nearby coffee shops and markets. To date, the food waste recycling system has processed a total of approximately 8,000 kilograms of food waste. After dehydration and decomposition, 300 kilograms of organic fertilizer was eventually produced. According to reports, the food waste recycling system consists of crushers, dehydrators and microbiological mixers, each priced at about 45,000 Singapore dollars (about 32,600 US dollars).
