SUNNYVALE, CA, October 19 / PRNewswire / - This device improves power efficiency and integration by individually controlling three independent LED groups. Advanced Analogic Technologies Incorporated (NASDAQ: AATI), a semiconductor developer of power management semiconductors for mobile consumer electronics, today introduced the versatile and efficient dual charge pump AAT2803 . The device supports white LED (light emitting diode) backlighting and camera flash applications for portable systems with polymer lithium-ion batteries. The AAT2803 can individually control three separate LED groups (two for the backlight and one for the camera flash) and seven channels (six for the backlight and one for the camera flash). In addition, the AAT2803 significantly conserves power and space on a handheld device equipped with two displays and includes a light load mode to minimize power consumption while the handheld's display is in standby. KinShum, director of strategic marketing at Analog Devices, said: "Most handheld devices today are equipped with two displays: a clamshell design (primary display, secondary display) or a vertical design (with primary display and backlighting Keyboard) By combining separate control of two independent backlight LED banks (with flash function) with light load mode, the AAT2803 charge pump can help designers save energy while reducing the number of components and package size. Maximize Efficiency The backlight charge pump can drive up to six LEDs at 180mA. The unit individually controls two groups of four and two LEDs respectively, providing backlighting for the primary and secondary displays. Output operation can be independent or parallel. The AAT2803 features Yannison's AS2Cwire (TM) (Advanced Simple Serial Control â„¢) digital interface to turn on, off, or set current for any of the 16 log scale backlight LEDs. Four low-current settings make it possible to operate in light-load mode down to 50uA (normal). The backlight charge pump in 1X, 1.5X and 2X three modes of operation, in order to achieve maximum power efficiency. By comparing the forward voltage of each LED and the input voltage, the operation mode can be selected automatically. The optimized sink current minimizes the voltage space required to drive each LED and maximizes power efficiency by lengthening the time the device is in 1X mode before switching to 1.5X mode. Unlike most integrated solutions on the market today, the AAT2803 uses a dedicated charge pump to support the backlight. Therefore, the operation of the backlight will not be affected by the flash photography, because photographic flash by a separate charge pump engine driven. Flash Function For flash applications, this device enables integration between charge pump and regulated output voltage. The circuit has a continuous current of up to 120mA, pulse current up to 300mA, while the circuit also added a separate start-up pin, in order to maximize system flexibility. AAT2803 built-in integrated thermal protection, can be automatically shut down in the event of overload short circuit. Its smooth start-up circuit prevents overcurrent during startup. By using a constant 1MHz switching frequency, designers can support the device with tiny ceramic capacitors. Pricing and Availability The AAT2803 is coming soon in a lead-free, thermally enhanced 24-pin QFN44 package and is available in temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees to 80 degrees. The unit's unit price is 1.97 US dollars (for every 1,000 pieces of batch).
