In 2010, global pellet mining output hit a record high

According to the latest iron ore report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), global pellet production in 2010 increased by 32% to 388.1 million tons, a record high.

According to the report, the increase in pellet production and exports reflects the rapid increase in demand for pellets in most countries. However, the exception is the United States, which uses pellets as its main raw material, and its steel production has not yet fully recovered from the sudden drop in 2009.

China is still the world's largest producer of pellets, with output increasing to 110.3 million tons. At present, the annual production capacity of more than 5 million tons of new pellets is under construction in China.

Unctad said that there are currently more than 46 million tons of new pellet production capacity in the world is being brewing, including Brazil, Mauritania, Bolivia, Canada, Australia, India, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Iran and other countries.

This shows that when the quality of iron ore is reduced, the production of pellets is used as a way to profit from mining projects. In addition, due to the stricter environmental requirements for the sintering plant to promote pelletized mines to be more competitive and the increase in direct-reduced iron production, it is expected that demand for pellets will further increase in the future.

Unctad estimates that in 2010 global pellet ore exports were 145 million tons, an increase of 46% year-on-year. Brazil is still the largest exporter of pellets. Exports increased by 77% from 2009 to 53.6 million tons. Canada ranks second with exports of 21.2 million tons.
