Infrared light is an electromagnetic wave with a wavelength between microwave and visible light. A report published by the team of Professor Jiang Hongrui of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the latest academic journal "Advanced Engineering Materials" said they have developed a new material with a thickness of less than 1 mm that can absorb 94% of infrared light. After covering the new material, the object is difficult to be detected by the infrared camera.
This material uses the black silicon commonly used in solar panels. The black silicon surface has a large number of tiny needle-like structures, erected like trees in the forest, and is called "nanowire". After the light hits its surface, it will reflect back and forth between the "nanowires", making it difficult to escape, and this material will be difficult to find. The researchers used tiny silver particles to etch the silicon surface, making the "nanowires" more elongated, thereby enhancing the material's ability to absorb infrared light.
The researchers said that in addition to using this material to help the target object "stealth" the infrared camera, electric heating elements can also be placed in this material to send out false thermal signals to confuse the infrared camera.
