A recent survey in the UK found that many British teenagers only have 4 hours of sleep every night, and often fall asleep because of watching TV or playing video games, resulting in poor sleep quality.
According to the survey, about one-third of British teenagers have a “garbage sleep†every night. According to the British Sleep Committee, “garbage sleep†refers to sleep deprivation and low-quality sleep. Like “junk foodâ€, it has become an important cause of unhealthy lifestyles among adolescents.
The quality of sleep time is not satisfactory
Dr. Chris Adzkoski of the Edinburgh Sleep Center said: "The impact of 'garbage sleep' on young people is getting more and more serious. This trend is very worrying."
Edzkoski said: "What we are seeing is the emergence of the 'garbage sleep' phenomenon. 'Garbage sleep' means that the time and quality of sleep are not satisfactory, making the brain unable to get enough rest, thus affecting young people. Performance in school."
The British Sleep Council surveyed 1,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 16 and found that 30% of them sleep only 4 to 7 hours a night, less than the usual eight or nine hours.
In addition, nearly 25% of teenagers say they fall asleep at least once a week while watching TV, listening to music or playing video games. Almost all teenagers have a phone, stereo or TV set, and two-thirds of them have three devices.
Among boys between the ages of 12 and 14, about 58% have telephones, stereos, televisions and game consoles in their bedrooms. One-fifth of them admit that driving a TV or a computer can affect their sleep.
Strictly implement "turn off the lights and sleep"
The survey found that nearly 40% of teenagers said they often feel tired during class hours, but only 10% said they value sleep at night.
The British Sleep Committee said that computers, televisions and MP3 players in the bedroom made the problem of "garbage sleep" worse. Moreover, the current parents are more than "the kindness" of the previous generation, and often cannot strictly implement the requirement of "turning off the lights and sleeping." The committee recommends that young parents should instill in their children the concept that sleep is very important for health, and that children should be strictly supervised to sleep on time and that all appliances must be turned off when sleeping.
Edzkoski said: "Youth should develop a healthy lifestyle, including healthy sleep and healthy food. The method is simple: turn off the appliance and go to bed early."
Experts say that “garbage sleep†may lead to weight gain, because lack of sleep can change the body's hormone secretion, making the body increase the demand for sugar and high-fat foods in order to increase energy. In addition, sleep problems can lead to problems such as decreased academic performance, thyroid problems, and even depression.

Nouns explain "garbage sleep"
“Junk SLEEP†is a term used by the British Sleep Committee to specifically address the problem of insufficient sleep time and low quality sleep. The British Sleep Committee said that “garbage sleep†corresponds to “junk food†(JUNK FOOD), and hopes to remind people that these two issues have become the two “killers†of the British people, especially the healthy lifestyle of adolescents.
