According to the U.S. news agency, recently, American scientists said that the discovery of a novel gene in microbes could greatly increase ethanol production.
Experts at the BioEnergy Science Center (BESC) of the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have been searching for a microorganism that can synthesize its own enzymes, enabling the plant to break down from the initial sugar to the one that ferments to ethanol. In the conversion, they finally found this gene controlling ethanol production in Clostridium thermocellum, which doubled the efficiency conversion rate.
"This is an important milestone in the history of biomass energy development. With the increase in ethanol production, it can help the United States reduce its dependence on foreign oil, and it also saves consumers a lot of money." Energy Minister Steven Chu (Steven Chu) said. (Casey)
