Sandvik Coromant gives Mercedes-Benz's used blades a new life

When Sandvik Coromant Brazil contacted the car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz and offered a full service to dispose of used carbide inserts, the proposal led to significant improvements in the company's recycling program.

Mercedes-Benz's Brazilian truck and bus factory is located in San Bernardo do Campo in the Greater Sao Paulo region, and it quickly responded positively to Sandvik Coromant's advice.
Alessandra Costa, head of environmental and management systems at Mercedes-Benz in Brazil, explained, “This is a perfect fit for our 'clean production' program, which aims to reduce waste generation and reduce the consumption of raw materials and natural resources. Mercedes-Benz's engine and axle production division in San Bernardo produces about 1.8 tons of used carbide inserts each year. Before participating in Sandvik Coromant's plan, Mercedes-Benz sold used blades to ordinary recycling companies.

Costa said that “Sandvik Coromant” is particularly interested in how to properly recycle used blades and meet the requirements of Brazilian law.

The Sandvik Coromant recycling concept was applied globally in 1996 and is well received by the market. This recycling service for scrap alloy blades and carbide tools manages non-renewable resources by recycling and reusing their raw materials.

Sandvik Coromant Brazil decided to take a proactive approach to finding partners willing to sell used blades. The partnership with Mercedes-Benz is an excellent example of how the policy works. After collecting the alloy blades in Brazil and transporting them to India, Sandvik Coromant recycles the specially built carbide recycling plant. The plant is certified to ISO 9001 and the environmental standards ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
